I first met Darla & Karla at Hastings High School. I was friends with both of them at first. Then a closer bond developed with Darla because we lived together for a short time, while I was going through my divorce. She was also going through some troubles with Craig's father before he passed. We comforted each other during this time. While Darla and baby Craig lived with me we had some fun times. I remember taking a trip to Detroit then crossing the border into Canada when we were pulled over on our way back at the border. I guess we looked suspicious. But, I had a tiny marijuana roach on me and didn't know what to do with it. I was in a panic. While we were waiting to be interogatted I noticed a big bag of marijuana under a seat in the waiting room. I told Darla to get it and she told me to get it. Thank God neither of us got it or we might have been in big trouble because they separated us and was asked if we had any drugs on us. We both said no. While they search my purse they found a small marijuana roach. I quickly and stupidly said it was my brother's. Now why would your brother's roach be in your purse, Darla said afterwards. We laughed so hard over that. Darla had such a great sense of humor and I loved that about her. We laughed daily and at times cried. When things got serious with our new men in our lives, we both married and our friendship lead us in different directions. I moved to Waterford and her and Craig moved in with Mr. Schantz.

Oh, nothing happened to me after I was caught lying to the Border Patrol Officers. They just let us go. We believed it was because they realized we weren't trafficking any drugs and we weren't stupid enough to pick up that bag of dope under the chair. But, we laughed all the way home that night. We never once had an argument or difference of opinion while living together. That's due to Darla's wonderful layed back personality and her genuinely loving demeanor she had for her friends. The world won't be the same without Darla in it.
