I wish I had gotten the chance to meet my dad's, Damian (Herman) Curtiss' cousin Roland. Dad would tell me all the stories of his cousin Roland and Roland's brother Roger growing up. I think my favorite would be when a bull chased them in the field and my dad had to climb a tree to get away from him while Roland and Roger laughed. Seemed like their was always mischief with those three. ~smile~. Rest in Eternal Peace, Roland.

Story shared: Cousins Growing Up on the Farm

Roger, Roland, and I --cousins each of the same age within a year -- spent many summer days as kids on Clarence and Ruby's Farm. Not only did we dig deep into George Cogswell's 8 foot manure pile years in the making, sweating together to make a dent in its removal, we took a break to walk the pasture nearby only to be chased by George's ornery bull. Roger and Roland laughed hilariously as I was trapped in a tree with the bull pacing around it for hours. Roland and I were on the same Hastings Senior Varsity Football team in '59 and '60, Roland as a "star" half-back and I a grunt left guard. We beat Greenville and our "cousin" Louis Feldpausch, son of Herman Feldpausch, my grandfather. Roland and I both tried to protect Roger from all the girls chasing him in high school, to no avail. Roger was the handsome one, Roland the athlete, and I the nurd. Shortly before Feb. 20, on his trip to Florida to retrace his steps with Jan to Key West, Roland and his faithful canine friend, Millie, were considering stopping by to see us here in Boston, but Millie wanted to get home and my wife, Mary, was ill. Roland, we miss you dearly. We remember your story of Jake the Rancher and the importance of prayer daily. Thank you for sharing with us and staying by us now.

We are saddened by Roland's passing. We just want to say thank you for the many years Roland and his family have been a blessing to us through there wonderful hometown business,Mills Landing. We have enjoyed so many years of gathering with family and friends over a wonderful meal and with such hospitality. Mills has been our favorite place to meet and we feel like part of the Mills family. You all have made a lasting impact on our lives.

My young grandson (now 19) would join us for breakfast at Mills Landing for years, and he happily looked forward to the Pancake man coming to our table to take his order. It was a T-rex, a brontasauras or a turtle. But Jan would take him seriously and Brandon was thrilled. I remember the many small quiet things like this that Jan would do for his customers. We will miss him! We both send our prayers and condolences at his loss.

Roger, Roland, and I spent many days together growing up on Clarence and Ruby's farm on Center Rd. The old John Deere was our friend. We worked hard together cleaning out "Uncle George's barn" and ran from his angry bull as we crossed the open field. Roland was, as usual, the better runner.

Roland and I played together on the HHS varsity football team ('59-'60). As half-back and tight end, Roland was a star, though he would never admit it.

Roland is our "star". He taught us how to live and how to die. "Though he would never admit it." Thank you Roland, for being you. Go in Peace.
